A HERITAGE TO PRESERVE

Opened as footpaths, the former French pilgrimage ways leading towards Santiago de Compostela benefit from two major international marks of recognition :

  • that of "European cultural itinerary", distinction awarded by the Council of Europe in 1987
  • inclusion on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1998 (cultural property n° 868)

These distinctions imply that the itineraries leading to Compostela must be protected from over-commercialisation and the practices of mass tourism which would completely destroy the existential aspect of the pilgrimage.

Unfortunately, publicity based on approximations, marketing based on plans devoid of any real roots in the Ways and designed to appropriate them, the multiplication of itineraries suscitated by greed or the windfall effect of grants, the packaging of all kinds of products either irrelevant to the Ways or of poor quality, media noise, a lack of coordination between stakeholders, the proliferation of low-grade initiatives, amateurism or parochialism, etc., are combining to subvert a cultural symbol the loss of which would be prejudicial for us all.

The Santiago Pilgrim Ways, UNESCO World Heritage listed in Spain as well as in France and awarded "European Cultural Itinerary" status by the Council of Europe, constitute a human, living heritage.

They carry values such as solidarity, the feeling of being part of a shared civilisation, and the desire to achieve the same objective together.

They are places of spiritual pilgrimage, but also places which cultural tourism can organise and enhance.

We therefore have a responsibility towards future generations. Every single one of us - individuals, groups, informal communities or institutions, associations, accommodation providers, ramblers, pilgrims, tourists, inhabitants - we are all the true guardians of this heritage and its values.
